(More customer reviews)There are a lot of uses for chalkboard paint and so far I've only done a few things with it. I did a big chalkboard in a thrifted frame for my daughter's room using a spray type chalkboard paint. I wasn't really happy with that. So when she and I got a bunch of wood cigar boxes and decided to do chalkboard tops on them, we tried this instead.
The paint is very thick and we used a foam brush to apply a thin layer, waited an hour, applied another layer, waited an hour, and applied a third layer. Let it cure for 24 hours as recommended. After that we conditioned it with chalk (rub chalk all over it, wipe it off). Both boxes look good and black with a slight sheen. The chalk wipes off easily with a soft rag.
I did mine on the bare wood, sanded just a bit, she did hers on a card stock glued to the box. Her's turned out a lot smoother and nicer looking than mine did. The grain of the wood was a little crude for a chalkboard surface. However it doesn't seem to affect performance. I can still erase my chalk marks.
We are planning to do more things with it, including the idea on the bottle of painting planters with it as a cute way to identify plants.
Lots of fun!
