This is the best globe that I have seen. Because it is removable from the base, you can pick up, take it over to better light, set it in your lap and explore, pass it around to another person, and so on. It gives you a lot of flexibility. The base is also very stable. You don't have to worry about knocking this over. Some other globes that are mounted on stands have a base that is too small, making them top-heavy and unstable. The base on this globe is also elegant looking. It is acrylic, but thick, so it looks more like glass. For those who may be considering an illuminated globe, keep in mind that that you would have to locate it near an electrical outlet, limiting flexibility of location. By contrast, this globe can be placed anywhere you want it basically. Finally, note that National Geographic uses a highly durable printing technology to protect the graphics and text from wearing off from use. It also makes the globe easy to clean and protects it from stains. If you have kids, you definitely want a National Geographic globe.
